Toyota and Suzuki Forge New Path with All-Electric SUV Collaboration: The Future of EVs to Arrive Soon at Tynan Suzuki
In an exciting new chapter of their partnership, Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation are set to launch an all-electric SUV that combines Suzuki’s design expertise and Toyota’s EV technology. This Suzuki-designed, all-electric SUV will be built at Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat, India, with global availability planned by 2025. This milestone underscores both brands' commitment to leading the EV market while advancing a shared vision for a carbon-neutral future.
A Legacy of Innovation: Toyota and Suzuki’s Longstanding Partnership
Suzuki and Toyota trace their origins to Enshu, in western Shizuoka Prefecture, where both companies transitioned from manufacturing looms to making cars. Since Suzuki’s Chairman Osamu Suzuki and Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda began exploring collaborations in 2016, their partnership has grown significantly. Together, they have introduced co-branded vehicles across Europe, India, and Africa—such as the Toyota RAV4 sold as the Suzuki Across and the Corolla wagon rebranded as the Suzuki Swace. Now, they’re taking the next step in their alliance with this all-electric SUV, which will be marketed as the Suzuki EVX and under Toyota’s brand.
Spotlight on the New Electric SUV Model
The new electric SUV model reflects the shared vision of Suzuki and Toyota, aligning with the Toyota Urban SUV and Suzuki EVX concepts unveiled in 2023. With compact dimensions, sleek body lines, and distinctive full-width tail-light designs, these models embody both style and functionality.
The Toyota Urban SUV concept, which will launch in Europe, is designed to sit between the Yaris Cross and C-HR in size, offering two battery size options and both front- and all-wheel-drive versions. As Toyota's most affordable electric SUV yet, this model slots just below the mid-size Toyota bZ4X. Meanwhile, the Suzuki EVX concept features a powerful 60kWh battery, expected to use Blade lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) technology from battery manufacturer BYD.
Shared Vision for a Carbon-Neutral Future
As Toyota President Koji Sato remarked, "By leveraging the BEV unit and platform that we jointly developed, we will take a new step in our collaboration in the field of electrified vehicles...We would like to learn from each other’s strengths, compete, and further joint efforts based on a multi-pathway approach." This joint venture allows both companies to bring their customers more choices and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that while the companies continue to compete, their collaboration deepens their mutual commitment to solving social issues and achieving carbon neutrality.
