The highly anticipated next-generation Kia Seltos is set to make waves when it debuts in January 2026, with a fresh look and the exciting addition of a hybrid powertrain option. This upcoming model brings a more rugged, boxier design, reminiscent of Kia’s latest electric vehicles (EVs), which marks a bold new direction for the brand.

Spotted undergoing winter testing in Europe, the new Seltos showcases its squared-off styling, with the front and rear design closely resembling the EV5 mid-sized electric SUV, as well as the K4 small car replacing the Cerato. The Seltos' iconic design elements, such as integrated roof rails and larger wheel-arch mouldings, are set to return but with a modern twist.

Hybrid Powertrain: More Options for Drivers

For the first time, the Seltos will offer a hybrid powertrain option, marking a significant step towards greener, more sustainable driving options. While the details remain under wraps, multiple South Korean media outlets have confirmed that the Seltos Hybrid will borrow the powertrain from the Hyundai Kona Hybrid. This hybrid system includes a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a 32kW/172Nm electric motor and a 1.32kWh battery pack, all mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The result? A total system output of 104kW and 265Nm, offering an efficient and powerful driving experience. In a significant step forward, there will also be the option for an electronic all-wheel-drive (E-AWD) system, which will further enhance the versatility of the Seltos Hybrid, making it even more appealing for Australian drivers who love adventure.

Seltos Hybrid’s Impact on Kia’s Lineup

Kia already has the Niro Hybrid in its lineup, which offers a similar-sized hybrid SUV option, alongside the electric EV3, expected to go on sale in 2025. Despite some overlap, Kia believes there’s room for both the hybrid-powered Niro and the new Seltos Hybrid. While the Seltos Hybrid may compete with the Niro HEV, it could appeal to a different audience, providing more variety and choice in Kia’s already impressive hybrid lineup.

With the current Kia Seltos being one of the brand's top sellers in Australia, accounting for 7777 sales in the past year, the arrival of the hybrid version is expected to strengthen its position even further. Kia Australia already offers hybrid variants of popular models like the Sportage, Niro, Sorento, and Carnival, and the addition of the Seltos Hybrid will surely make an impact on the hybrid vehicle market, where Kia ranked sixth among 11 carmakers.
