Exciting news for Australian SUV enthusiasts—the next-generation Mitsubishi ASX is officially on its way, with a launch set for the second half of 2025. Government approval documents have confirmed that the new ASX, which is based on the Renault Captur, will come in at least three trim levels—LS, Aspire, and Exceed—offering a refined yet simplified lineup for Australian buyers. This marks a shift from the current model, which is available in six variants, including the now-axed GS and ES entry-level grades.

Price and Features: A Step Up for ASX

With the removal of the base GS and ES models, pricing for the new ASX is expected to rise, with entry-level variants likely to start above $30,000. This represents a significant increase compared to the outgoing ASX GS, which was priced at $24,490 before on-road costs. While final pricing details are yet to be confirmed, the move to a European-built model is expected to impact costs due to import tariffs and a shift in manufacturing locations from Japan to Spain.

The entry-level ASX LS is anticipated to feature a 10.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, a six-speaker audio system, 17-inch alloy wheels, climate control, keyless entry and start, and a suite of active safety features. Higher-end variants like the Aspire and Exceed could include 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio, leather-look or full-leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, and a wireless phone charger.

    What’s Under the Hood?

Although final powertrain options for Australia remain unconfirmed, Mitsubishi is considering all the engine choices currently available in Europe. This includes a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, as well as mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants.

Australia is most likely to receive the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A full-hybrid variant featuring a Renault-sourced 1.6-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine also has a strong chance of making it to Australian showrooms. However, manual and plug-in hybrid options are less certain for the local market.

    Why the Change?

Mitsubishi Australia's decision to transition to the Renault-based European ASX was driven by the introduction of new Australian Design Rules (ADRs) that require autonomous emergency braking (AEB) on all new vehicles from March 1, 2025. Upgrading the existing ASX to meet these regulations was deemed commercially unfeasible, accelerating the shift to the next-generation model.

As a result, the current ASX—along with the Eclipse Cross and Pajero Sport—has been discontinued in Australia. However, Mitsubishi expects to have enough stock to last until the end of 2025. By early 2026, Mitsubishi's local lineup will include the new European-built ASX, the Outlander, and the Triton, with a next-generation Pajero Sport expected to arrive later that year.

    Mitsubishi’s Commitment to Australia

Despite the transition, Mitsubishi remains committed to the Australian market with its competitive 10-year/200,000-kilometre dealer-service-activated warranty, outpacing Renault's five-year/unlimited-kilometre coverage. Additionally, Mitsubishi’s extensive dealer network—including Tynan Mitsubishi Kirrawee in Sydney—ensures that customers will continue to receive top-tier service and support.

With its modern styling, updated technology, and European influence, the 2025 Mitsubishi ASX promises to bring a fresh and exciting offering to the Australian small SUV segment. Stay tuned for further updates as we get closer to its official launch!
