The New Mitsubishi ASX: Premium Evolution with a Renault Twist – Coming to Tynan Mitsubishi Kirrawee
If you’ve been waiting for the next evolution in small SUVs, Mitsubishi has lifted the veil on its all-new ASX, and it’s bringing some major changes to Australian roads by the end of 2025. The redesigned Mitsubishi ASX, available soon at Tynan Mitsubishi Kirrawee, is set to redefine the compact SUV experience – and yes, it comes with a more premium price tag.
A European Influence with Japanese Precision
The new ASX may come as a surprise to long-time Mitsubishi fans. Built in Europe and based on the Renault Captur, this rebadged version brings a fresh face to the lineup. Underneath the Mitsubishi badge lies Renault engineering – a strategic move by Mitsubishi to align its vehicles with more premium expectations.
While some purists may debate its authenticity, Mitsubishi Motors Australia is standing firm in its belief that this vehicle reflects the brand’s new direction: sophistication, style, and modern performance.
Price Bump Reflects Premium Features
Tynan Mitsubishi Kirrawee customers should expect a price increase over the current ASX model. The outgoing model – which was once one of Australia’s most affordable SUVs at around $28,490 drive-away – will be replaced by a European-made variant starting with the LS grade. Prices are expected to start from $32,490, with speculation that even the most affordable version may hover near $35,000 drive-away.
So why the jump? According to Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO Shaun Westcott, the ASX is no longer aiming to be just "cheap and cheerful." Instead, it is stepping up as a premium offering with features to match. This includes turbocharged powertrains, potentially a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch, and options for hybrid power in the future.
From Budget-Friendly to Feature-Rich
Shaun Westcott explained that while the new ASX may be more expensive, it delivers far more value in terms of design, technology, and overall quality. “If you look at the product, the quantity of the finish, and the premiumness of that product, inevitably it's going to be more expensive,” he said.
He also reinforced Mitsubishi's commitment to value, noting that while the brand isn’t aiming to be the cheapest on the market, it still delivers exceptional bang for your buck – just with a more premium edge.
Changing Expectations and a New Direction
One thing’s clear: the outgoing ASX could no longer keep pace with modern safety and emissions standards in Australia. With the new National Vehicle Emissions Standards (NVES) and evolving customer expectations, Mitsubishi opted for a smarter, more stylish, and regulation-compliant model. The Renault-based ASX meets these demands – and looks good doing it.
Even with higher pricing, Westcott pointed to the success of the new Outlander as evidence that Mitsubishi customers are willing to pay more for added value. He expects the ASX to follow a similar path.
