The meaning behind the little known roadside markers that could save your life this festive season.
If you are hitting the road this Christmas break, you may spot these little green reflectors.
But what do these green reflectors mean and how can they keep you safe this festive season?
What do the green reflectors mean?
3-2-1 Green Reflectors can be seen throughout Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. These little green reflectors are placed on white posts on the side of some highways.
Originally intended for truck drivers, these small green dos indicate a pull over, rest and let faster vehicles pass by when travelling down a two-way carriageway or single-lane road.
The initiative, started by road safety activist and truck driver Rod Hannifey, aims to alert drivers that there is a safe place to pull off the road, keeping drivers safe on the roads.
The idea is simple: three green reflectors appear 500m away from the location, two will appear 250m away, and the final reflector indicated the area which is safe for drivers to pull over, serving as an informal truck bay.
Although the space can be utilised by all drivers, it is aimed at drivers who are carrying trailers, caravans or heavy cargo, causing them to travel less than the average speed limit. The area provides a safe space for drivers to pull over and allow other drivers to pass.
The difference between these green reflectors and regular pull-over bays, it signals an informal stopping bay. Thus, these stopping points are not intended for long-periods of use.
