The S5 EV stands at 4476mm long, 1849mm wide, and 1621mm tall, with a 2730mm wheelbase. That’s about 150mm longer than the BYD Atto 3, giving it more interior space, including 453 litres of boot space, which can expand to 1441 litres with the rear seats folded down. That’s an improvement over the Atto 3, which offers 440L and 1340L respectively.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, the MG S5 EV features a 125kW/250Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels. Buyers will have the option of two battery sizes: the 49kWh or 62kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with claimed driving ranges of 415km and 515km, respectively. Although these ranges are based on the NEDC cycle, they still compare favourably against rivals in the segment.

Expect DC fast charging speeds of up to 120kW for the 49kWh battery and 150kW for the 62kWh pack, allowing you to charge from 30% to 80% in just 19 minutes. AC charging is limited to 6.6kW, but overall, the S5 EV’s fast-charging capabilities ensure it’s perfect for longer trips or busy lifestyles.

Acceleration and Handling

With a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8 seconds flat for the 49kWh Excite model, and 8.2 seconds for the 62kWh variants, the S5 EV offers a smooth and responsive driving experience. It’s agile enough for city driving, yet powerful enough for highway speeds, making it a well-rounded electric SUV for Australian roads.

Although pricing is yet to be confirmed, the MG S5 EV is expected to be slightly more expensive than the MG 4 hatch, which starts at $36,990 drive-away. The S5 EV will likely be priced competitively against rivals like the BYD Atto 3 ($39,990 to $44,990) and Kia EV3 (from $48,990 drive-away), making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs in its class.
