Subaru has officially revealed its new 'Strong Hybrid' system, a next-generation hybrid technology that promises improved fuel efficiency and performance. Developed in collaboration with Toyota, this system is making its debut in Japan with the Crosstrek SUV and is set to arrive in Australia in 2025 with the new Forester.

Subaru’s Strong Hybrid: A Significant Upgrade

The new hybrid technology marks a significant step forward for Subaru, offering more meaningful fuel savings compared to its current hybrid models. While previous Subaru hybrids provided only modest fuel reductions, the new Strong Hybrid promises up to a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency. In real-world terms, this could mean the next-gen Forester hybrid will consume as little as 5.2L/100km – a notable improvement from the 6.5L/100km seen in today's models.

Under the Hood: Boxer Engine Meets Toyota Electric Tech

The Strong Hybrid system combines Subaru’s signature 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer engine with a more powerful electric motor and battery sourced from Toyota. This is a substantial upgrade from the current Subaru hybrids, which only use a small electric motor. In the new system, the electric motor delivers 88kW/270Nm – a huge leap from the 12.3kW/66Nm of today’s models.

Additionally, the lithium-ion battery has been enlarged, running at a higher voltage of 260V, compared to 188V in earlier versions. This results in better performance, improved fuel efficiency, and a hybrid driving range of over 1000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel in the Crosstrek.

Performance Boost

The Strong Hybrid technology also delivers a much-needed performance boost. The Crosstrek’s acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h has been reduced by more than two seconds, cutting the time from approximately 11 seconds to around nine seconds. This enhanced performance, combined with the hybrid’s improved fuel economy, makes it a compelling choice for eco-conscious drivers who still want a spirited driving experience.

Key Features: All-Wheel Drive and Electric-Only Mode

Subaru stays true to its roots by maintaining its signature permanent all-wheel-drive system in the hybrid models. Unlike many hybrids that sacrifice all-wheel-drive performance, Subaru has kept the mechanical connection between the front and rear wheels intact.

Another highlight of the Strong Hybrid system is the introduction of an electric-only drive mode. This new feature allows short distances to be driven entirely on electric power, offering quiet, emissions-free driving in urban areas.

New Features and Safety Technology

In addition to the upgraded hybrid system, Subaru has introduced several new technologies in the Crosstrek and Forester hybrids. For the first time, a 12.3-inch widescreen digital instrument cluster will be available, providing drivers with a modern and intuitive interface.

The latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight X safety system will also feature in the Strong Hybrid models. This updated system includes advanced features such as assisted lane changes, lane-centring, and hands-free driving in low-speed traffic jams, allowing drivers to take their hands off the wheel while keeping their eyes on the road.

Australian Launch: Forester to Lead the Charge

The first Subaru model in Australia to feature the new Strong Hybrid system will be the next-generation Forester, scheduled to arrive in showrooms in 2025. While the Crosstrek hybrid is already on sale in Japan, there is no confirmation yet if or when this model will make its way to Australian shores.

With its significant improvements in both fuel economy and performance, the Strong Hybrid technology represents a major step forward for Subaru’s hybrid lineup. Whether you're a longtime Subaru fan or considering a hybrid for the first time, the 2025 Forester promises to deliver a powerful, efficient, and eco-friendly driving experience.

Stay tuned for more details on Subaru's hybrid lineup as we get closer to its Australian release.
