If you were asked if you're a safe driver, you'd probably say yes. But when it comes to specific risky behaviors behind the wheel, many Australians admit to habits that compromise road safety.

A survey of 925 Australian drivers by Finder's Safe Driving Report 2021 revealed concerning behaviors: 45% eat while driving, 28% drive in thongs, 13% use their phones for texts, and 7% even drive with their knees!

South Australians top the list as the worst offenders, with 70% admitting to risky driving habits. In contrast, New South Wales drivers are the safest, with 44% claiming they've never engaged in risky driving behaviors.

Regardless of your driving habits, practicing safe driving is crucial.

Here are the Top 12 Tips from NRMA to ensure safety on the road:

  1. Minimise Distractions: Anything that takes your focus off driving, like using your phone or dealing with distractions inside the car, increases the risk of accidents.
  2. Eat Before Driving: Avoid eating while driving to stay focused on the road and maintain control of your vehicle.
  3. Wear Appropriate Footwear: Driving in thongs can hinder pedal control. Always wear shoes that provide good grip and allow full movement of your feet.
  4. Scan Your Surroundings: Be aware of your surroundings by regularly scanning the road ahead and checking blind spots before changing lanes.
  5. Maintain Safe Distance: Keep a safe following distance to allow ample time to stop, especially in adverse weather conditions.
  6. Adapt to Conditions: Adjust your driving to match road and weather conditions, and avoid pushing beyond your comfort zone.
  7. Check Blind Spots: Before changing lanes, ensure your side mirrors are adjusted correctly and physically check blind spots over your shoulder.
  8. Secure Passengers: Ensure children and pets are properly restrained to prevent distractions and ensure their safety in case of an accident.
  9. Take Breaks: Plan regular breaks during long drives to stay alert and avoid fatigue. Consider swapping drivers or stopping for food and drinks to recharge.
  10. Plan Your Route: Use GPS systems to plan your route in advance and secure your phone in a mount to avoid distractions while driving.
  11. Buckle Up: Always wear a seat belt correctly and ensure all passengers do the same, as seat belts are crucial for reducing injuries in case of a collision.
  12. Avoid Phone Use: Never use your phone while driving, as it significantly increases the risk of accidents and is illegal in many places.

Following these tips not only enhances your safety but also contributes to making the roads safer for everyone.
