Groundbreaking cancer research is changing lives across Southern Sydney, with the St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) continuing to support innovative medical projects aimed at improving cancer treatment and patient outcomes.

A recent breakthrough highlighted by The Leader showcases the incredible work being carried out through St George and Sutherland Hospitals, where researchers are developing new approaches to better understand and treat advanced cancers.

    Advancing Immunotherapy Research

Among the researchers leading this important work is Dr Joyce Chiu, who has been awarded an SSMRF Cancer Research Grant for her project, Targeting tumour-derived enzymes to boost T-cell infiltration and immunotherapy success.

Dr Chiu’s research focuses on understanding how tumours can create barriers that stop immune cells from reaching and attacking cancer cells — one of the major reasons immunotherapy does not yet work for all patients.

Speaking about the project, Dr Chiu explained:

“Immunotherapy has given many people with advanced cancer new hope.”

She also highlighted the challenge researchers are working to overcome:

    “Cancers can block this process.”

To investigate this, Dr Chiu and her team are developing miniature laboratory models of blood vessels and tumours to test whether blocking tumour-derived substances can help immune cells enter tumours more effectively.

Dr Chiu said the ultimate goal is to help more patients benefit from immunotherapy treatments in the future:

    “Improve the effectiveness of immunotherapy.”

Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment for many patients around the world, offering new hope where traditional treatments may have had limited success. However, research like this is essential to improving outcomes and helping more people benefit from these advances.

    Local Research with Global Impact

The research being conducted through St George and Sutherland Hospitals highlights the growing importance of community-supported medical innovation.

Through the support of organisations, donors and local businesses, SSMRF continues to fund projects focused on:

    • Immunotherapy advancements
    • Precision medicine
    • Early cancer detection
    • Tumour biology research
    • Personalised patient care

These projects are helping position Southern Sydney as an important hub for medical research while delivering real benefits for patients and families across the community.
