Kia is set to wow the crowd at the upcoming SEMA Show with two rugged, all-terrain EV concepts: a more adventurous version of the 2024 Kia EV9 electric SUV and an innovative off-road PV5 minivan/ute concept. Both vehicles showcase Kia's vision for electric mobility in challenging environments, blending futuristic design with practical, go-anywhere capabilities.

Kia EV9: Ready for the Wild

The EV9 SEMA concept hints at a more rugged twist on Kia’s largest electric SUV. The teased image shows off striking new design elements, like bright yellow lighting accents that include a roof-mounted light bar and grille strips, and a beefed-up bumper with sturdy tow hooks. Adding to its adventurous stance, the EV9 concept is expected to feature a lift kit for increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires tucked into widened arches, and possibly a front skid plate to guard against rocky trails.

While this SEMA version is likely to retain the dual-motor setup seen in the production EV9, boasting 283kW of power and 700Nm of torque with all-wheel drive, the EV9 Earth’s impressive 512km range might take a hit due to the weight and drag of these off-road upgrades.

Speculation is growing that this off-road-ready EV9 could inspire a new X-Pro trim or a dealer-installed accessory pack, allowing Kia fans to take the EV9 on more rugged adventures. Kia plans to reveal more about this thrilling concept at SEMA, where it could mark a shift toward more versatile, capable trims across the brand's electric lineup.

PV5: Kia's Modular, All-Terrain Minivan/Ute Concept

The Kia PV5 concept, also bound for SEMA, combines minivan utility with rugged off-road potential. This flexible concept builds on Kia’s ‘Easy Swap’ technology, which uses standardised electromagnetic and mechanical couplings to transform the vehicle into different body styles – from an MPV to a ute, camper, or even van, all within a single day. This makes the PV5 a multi-purpose, adaptable vehicle ready for a variety of uses and terrains.

Outfitted with all-terrain gear similar to the EV9, the PV5 boasts a bold look with robust wheels and larger arches, though its lighting elements remain more understated. This innovative design could appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and businesses alike, especially as it could potentially rival Mitsubishi’s upcoming PHEV Delica, which is set to arrive by 2030.

Kia at SEMA 2024: Paving the Way for Rugged EVs

As Kia embraces the growing demand for adventure-ready EVs, these concepts are a step toward blending sustainability with off-road capability. With the unveiling of the EV9 and PV5 concepts, Kia is setting the stage for a future where electric vehicles aren't just city-friendly but are also capable of taking on tough terrains and versatile tasks. Whether these concepts evolve into production models or inspire future trim levels, they represent Kia’s commitment to reimagining electric mobility for all lifestyles.
