Renault’s Updated Captur SUV Set to Rival Mitsubishi ASX in 2025
Renault Australia has announced the arrival of its facelifted 2025 Captur small SUV, slated to hit local showrooms in the second half of the year. This refreshed model will compete head-to-head with the nearly identical new-generation Mitsubishi ASX, which is also debuting in 2025.
A Tale of Two Twins
The Renault Captur and Mitsubishi ASX share the CMF-B platform, as well as much of their design, interior, and equipment. Despite their similarities, these models will carry distinct badges and unique brand-specific touches.
Both SUVs will be produced in Spain and offer a variety of powertrains. While Australian specifications remain unconfirmed, international options for the Captur include:
- Hybrid options: A 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid and a plug-in hybrid with the same displacement.
- Petrol engines: A turbocharged three-cylinder, a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder, and a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel.
The pre-facelift Captur, last offered in Australia, featured a 113kW/270Nm 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, delivering power to the front wheels. Local buyers will likely see similar options in the updated model.
Captur’s Return to Australia
Renault paused the Captur’s local availability after selling out of the pre-facelift model late last year. Glen Sealey, General Manager of Renault Australia, emphasized the model’s popularity, stating, “The Renault Captur has historically been one of the most popular models in our Australian line-up. Dealers have been receiving constant enquiries from buyers asking when the new model is due.”
The updated Captur is just one of several refreshed Renault models on the horizon for the Australian market, with further announcements expected soon.
Price and Warranty: A Key Differentiator
Pricing is expected to play a significant role in distinguishing the Captur from its ASX rival. The outgoing ASX started at $24,990 and peaked at $35,240, while the previous Captur ranged from $33,000 to $39,500. Both models are anticipated to see price increases, with the ASX likely experiencing a more substantial rise due to its shift to European production.
Warranty coverage further separates the two brands. Mitsubishi offers a 10-year/unlimited kilometre warranty (with conditions), while Renault provides a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
Retail Footprint and Market Presence
Mitsubishi’s extensive network of 212 dealerships dwarfs Renault’s 57, providing a potential advantage in accessibility and customer reach. This disparity may influence buyer preferences, especially in regional areas.
A Shared History
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the ASX has shared its platform with a French counterpart. During its 15-year lifespan, the ASX served as the basis for the Citroen C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 in the early 2010s, showcasing a history of collaborative engineering.
Looking Ahead
The updated Captur and ASX offer Australian customers exciting options in the small SUV segment. With both models boasting advanced features, hybrid powertrains, and European refinement, the choice may ultimately come down to price, warranty, and dealership accessibility.
