As Australians get used to more advanced road cameras, some new high-tech surveillance-looking devices have sparked confusion and concern—especially in one Brisbane suburb.

A local resident recently took to Reddit after spotting three black box cameras hanging from trees and street signs near their home. The cameras appeared to be watching their property, raising fears about who installed them and why.

“I was notified about them yesterday and went and looked at one last night. Today, that camera is gone,” the concerned Reddit user wrote.

As expected, social media users were quick to chime in with humour, suggesting: 🦘 "It’s a possum box that allows them to time travel." 🐨 "It’s an elevator for elderly koalas."

While the cameras may look like something out of a spy thriller, their real purpose is far less dramatic.

What Are These Cameras Actually For?

The mystery black box cameras belong to Matrix, a traffic survey company operating in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

    A Matrix spokesperson confirmed:

"These are not speed cameras and are not equipped to record speed. These are low-resolution cameras for counting traffic."

Unlike speed cameras, these devices are used by traffic engineers and local governments to collect data on traffic flow, vehicle numbers, and congestion patterns.

🔍 Key facts about the Matrix cameras: ✔ They do NOT capture number plates or facial features ✔ They only record general vehicle movement ✔ They help local councils improve traffic management

To prevent confusion, Matrix has added QR codes on some cameras. Scanning them reveals:

"I am not a speed camera! Traffic surveys mean counting and studying the number of vehicles, pedestrians, and sometimes bikes at certain spots on local roads, highways, and intersections."

This information helps town planners and engineers make better decisions about road design and traffic light timing.

Social Media Panic Over Road Cameras Isn’t New

This isn’t the first time unusual road cameras have sparked public concern.

In September 2024, a futuristic-looking speed camera in Melbourne went viral online due to its bizarre design and unexpected placement.

One Facebook user commented: 🚗 “Just drove past it and I swear everyone was swerving just to stare at the robot thing on the side of the road.”

While road surveillance technology continues to evolve, it’s always best to verify facts before jumping to conclusions. If you ever spot a mysterious road camera, chances are, it’s there to help improve traffic conditions—not spy on you. 🚦
