Exciting news is on the horizon for Mitsubishi fans and eco-conscious drivers alike! Reports from Japan suggest that Mitsubishi is gearing up to launch an upgraded version of its Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). The refreshed mid-size SUV recently made its debut at a dealer launch in Japan, and if the stars align, it could make its way to Australian showrooms by early 2025.

What's New with the Outlander PHEV?

While official images of the updated Outlander PHEV have yet to surface, creative311 has given us a glimpse of what to expect. The updated model features a mild facelift that includes a redesigned front grille with 'active' shutters aimed at boosting aerodynamics. The rear-end design will remain consistent with the current model, ensuring familiarity for loyal customers.

In terms of wheels, the new Outlander PHEV will sport a fresh 20-inch alloy wheel design. Although the Bridgestone Ecopia tyres currently fitted to the vehicle might be swapped for a different brand in the production version, the 20-inch wheels will be standard on all models above the entry-level Outlander PHEV ES in Australia.

Inside, Mitsubishi is upping the ante with a 12.3-inch centre screen—an upgrade from the current 8.0- and 9.0-inch displays. The interior will also feature an auto-dimming rear-vision mirror, heated seats with a cooling function, and a new dark brown seat color.

However, the Outlander PHEV will be losing its Bose premium audio system, which will be replaced by a Yamaha setup. Despite these upgrades, there are no reports of changes to the Outlander PHEV’s 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder engine, electric motors, or its 20.0kWh battery pack—though an increase in battery size is anticipated. This could potentially extend the Outlander PHEV’s electric-only range to a coveted 100km, a notable boost from its current 84km range.

What Does This Mean for Australia?

The current second-generation Outlander PHEV, which debuted in 2021, has been a top performer in Australia. It’s been the best-selling plug-in hybrid of 2024, outpacing its sibling, the Eclipse Cross. Mitsubishi Australia has yet to confirm specifics about the updates for the local lineup, but it’s likely that some—or all—of these changes will make their way Down Under.

Mitsubishi is also expanding its Australian lineup, with plans to introduce a wider array of models, including SUVs and a Triton ute designed to rival the Ford Ranger Raptor, by the end of the decade. This expansion is in line with the company’s recent initiatives, including becoming the first car maker in Australia approved to use Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. This allows the Outlander and Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid SUVs to feed power back into the electricity grid.

Looking Ahead

With the updated Outlander PHEV set to hit Japanese showrooms in October, all eyes will be on how quickly it will cross the ocean to Australia. As Mitsubishi continues to push the boundaries of hybrid technology and expand its vehicle offerings, the refreshed Outlander PHEV is poised to make a significant impact on the market.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the launch date. The future of driving is electric, and Mitsubishi is leading the charge!
