Mitsubishi is adding more variety to its popular Triton ute range with the introduction of the all-new GLX-R variant, slotting neatly between the GLX+ and GLS models. Expected to arrive as part of a Model Year 2024.5 update, this new mid-spec version offers a balance of style, performance, and features at an accessible price point.

Key Features of the Triton GLX-R

The 2025 Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R builds on the already capable GLX+ but adds a dash of sportiness and extra comforts, making it an attractive option for ute buyers. Here's what the new GLX-R brings to the table:

  • Black 18-inch alloy wheels: These sporty wheels are a nod to the higher-end GSR model, giving the GLX-R a rugged, aggressive look.
  • Black sports bar: For added utility and off-road style, the GLX-R gets a black sports bar over the tub.
  • Carpet flooring and leather-wrapped steering wheel: These upgrades improve cabin comfort, replacing the GLX+'s more utilitarian vinyl flooring.
  • Super Select II four-wheel-drive system: Unlike the GLX+, the GLX-R comes with Mitsubishi's advanced 4WD system, allowing for full-time 4WD on sealed surfaces.

However, a few features from the GLX+ have been removed to make way for these upgrades, such as the side steps and the heavy-duty suspension. Instead, the GLX-R adopts a standard-duty suspension system and highway terrain tyres, making it more suitable for mixed on-road and light off-road use.

Power and Performance

The GLX-R shares the same 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel engine as the rest of the Triton range, delivering 150kW of power and 470Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This robust powertrain ensures that the GLX-R is just as capable as its siblings when it comes to towing and off-roading, with plenty of muscle for daily driving and work duties alike.

Where the GLX-R Fits

The GLX-R is aimed at filling the gap between the $53,290 GLX+ and the $59,090 GLS, likely slotting in with a price around $55,000. This makes it a great option for buyers looking for a ute that has a few more comforts and a sportier look than the GLX+, but without the price tag of the premium GLS.

Expansion of the Triton Range

This is the second expansion of the Triton range since its February 2024 launch. Mitsubishi also recently introduced sub-one-tonne payload versions of the GLS and GSR to appeal to novated lease customers. Additionally, the Triton line-up will see more growth in early 2025 with the introduction of single-cab and club-cab variants, as well as manual transmission options.

What’s Next for the Triton?

While pricing and availability details are still being finalized, dealerships in Queensland and the Northern Territory have already confirmed that stock is arriving. Mitsubishi Australia has not officially commented on future product details, but the GLX-R's arrival signals the brand’s continued effort to cater to a broad range of ute buyers, from budget-conscious tradies to premium truck enthusiasts.

With features tailored for both work and weekend adventures, the new Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R is sure to attract attention when it hits showrooms later this year. Stay tuned for more updates as Mitsubishi continues to expand its popular Triton range in 2025.
