MG Motor is wasting no time bringing its first-ever ute, the MG U9, to Australian roads — literally. Just over a week after its official reveal in Melbourne, the U9 is already undergoing local development and road testing, as MG ramps up for a Q4 2025 launch.

    Aussie Roads, Aussie Tough

The U9’s testing program is nothing short of ambitious. MG’s in-house engineering team has already kicked off evaluations across some of the country's most varied terrain, from Broome and Cooktown to Albany and Penguin.

According to MG Motor Australia, the goal is to ensure the U9 is ready for urban streets, bush tracks, and demanding worksites alike. This rigorous local testing reflects MG’s growing commitment to engineering vehicles specifically for Australian drivers and conditions.

Ready to Take on the Big Names

When it arrives later this year, the MG U9 will make a bold entrance into one of Australia’s most competitive segments — the dual-cab ute market. It’ll go head-to-head with heavy-hitters like the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, while also lining up alongside the LDV Terron 9, a mechanical twin that shares its underpinnings.

The Terron 9 is expected to launch in Australia mid-2025 and has already undergone its own round of local testing to refine advanced driver assistance systems like traffic sign recognition and lane-keep assist.

    What’s Under the Bonnet?

Both the MG U9 and its LDV cousin will feature a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 164kW, along with a class-standard 3500kg towing capacity. These figures position the U9 as a serious workhorse that doesn’t compromise on power.

    Ute Meets Comfort and Tech

Beyond performance, MG is throwing in some standout interior features for the U9:

    • Massaging driver’s seat for long-haul comfort
    • Flexible seat functionality to boost storage and convenience
    • A JBL sound system to bring premium audio to your daily drive

Full specifications and pricing will be released closer to launch, but MG has confirmed that the U9 will be backed by its industry-leading 10-year/250,000km warranty — or seven years/160,000km for commercial users.

    MG’s Big Aussie Ambition

The U9 is a key player in MG’s strategy to become a top-three automotive brand in Australia by 2030. With its blend of power, refinement, and local tuning, the U9 is shaping up to be more than just MG’s first foray into the LCV segment — it’s a statement of intent.
