MG's Electric Revolution: IM5 and IM6 Head to Australia
The electric vehicle market in Australia is about to welcome two revolutionary new players: the MG IM5 and MG IM6. These high-end, all-electric models mark a bold new era for MG Motor, and they’ll be available later this year at Tynan MG Sutherland – your trusted destination for innovation and performance in the Sutherland Shire.
Premium Power Meets Future Tech
Aimed squarely at challenging the likes of Mercedes-Benz EQE, BMW i5, and BMW iX, the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV represent MG's leap into the premium electric space. Each rides on a shared electric vehicle platform, and both offer a compelling blend of luxury, power, and advanced technology.
At Tynan MG Sutherland, these vehicles will be displayed alongside popular models like the MG3 city hatchback and the sporty MG Cyberster – but the IM5 and IM6 are unlike anything MG has released before.
Electrifying Performance Across the Board
- IM5 Sedan: Available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive Platinum trims, the IM5 comes equipped with a 100kWh battery. It boasts an impressive NEDC-tested range of up to 755km, and its top-tier AWD model can rocket from 0 to 100km/h in a blistering 2.74 seconds.
- IM6 SUV: This family-ready SUV offers a choice between RWD and AWD, with an entry-level model powered by a 75kWh battery. Seven-seat configurations and a top range of 670km make it a standout. The AWD version achieves 0-100km/h in 3.48 seconds, proving that practicality and power can coexist.
Charging is equally impressive, with the 100kWh models capable of fast-charging from 30% to 80% in just 15.2 minutes. Even the base 75kWh model can achieve the same in 20 minutes.
Luxury Features & Next-Level Technology
Inside the cabin, both the IM5 and IM6 flaunt futuristic features, including:
- A sweeping 26.3-inch display combining infotainment and driving data
- An additional 10.5-inch auxiliary screen
- Rear-wheel steering for tight maneuvering and high-speed stability
- Crab mode, allowing diagonal movement for easier parking
- Automated parking, One Touch reverse, and Rainy Night mode for optimal safety
Design-wise, buyers can choose from five sophisticated exterior colours (including Nevis Blue and Raphael Beige), and interior trims in beige or grey.
Sizing Up the Competition
The IM5 sedan stretches 4931mm in length, offering a sporty stance and 457 litres of boot space, expandable to 1290L. The IM6 SUV, with its larger 665L boot (1640L with seats down), suits families and long trips, all while rivaling the most elite luxury electric SUVs.
Why Australia – and Why Now?
According to MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao, Australia is a critical market for the brand’s global strategy. "Australia will be the second international market, outside of our domestic Chinese market, to launch the IM vehicles,” he said. The move underscores MG’s goal to become a Top Five automotive brand in Australia by 2027, with sights set on reaching the Top Three shortly after.
