MG Cyber X: Bold, Boxy, and Coming Soon – A New Era for MG SUVs?
MG is making waves once again, this time with a bold new SUV design that breaks away from its traditional sleek style. Introducing the MG Cyber X – a tough-looking, squared-off SUV set to debut at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 23.
And here at Tynan MG Sutherland, we’re keeping a close eye on this one, because if it makes its way to Australia, it could become a standout addition to the MG family.
What Is the MG Cyber X?
The Cyber X is MG’s first SUV to adopt a rugged, boxy design – a sharp contrast to the curvier lines of models like the ZS and HS. From the side, it looks more like a compact version of a Toyota LandCruiser Prado, exuding a more adventurous, off-road-ready aesthetic.
Key exterior highlights include:
- A full-width LED light bar up front
- An illuminated MG badge and slim driving lights
- Squared-off bodywork and hidden door handles
- A second full-width light bar across the rear
- Dual stacked brake lights and integrated roof rails
The Cyber X joins MG’s “Cyber” sub-brand, currently consisting of the Cyberster electric convertible, and hints at a much broader design and powertrain strategy for the future.
Electric Power Likely on the Cards
Built on MG’s new E3 platform, the Cyber X is expected to support both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) drivetrains. Given the Cyberster is a pure EV, it’s likely the Cyber X will follow suit.
This new platform integrates the battery structurally within the chassis, improving overall strength and reducing manufacturing complexity—important steps as MG continues its electrification journey.
While specific performance or battery details are still under wraps, we can expect a modern, tech-forward SUV that fits MG’s rapidly evolving lineup.
Will the MG Cyber X Come to Australia?
That’s the big question – and one we at Tynan MG Sutherland are hoping to answer soon. As of now, it’s unclear if the Cyber X will be built in right-hand drive, which determines whether we’ll see it in Australia or the UK.
Given MG’s strong presence in the local market and growing appetite for boxy, off-road-styled SUVs, there’s every reason to believe it could be headed our way—especially as MG plans to launch eight new models globally over the next two years.
The Boxy SUV Trend Is Just Getting Started
MG isn’t alone in this rugged revival. Other Chinese automakers like BYD and Chery are also embracing the boxy aesthetic, with models like the Fangchengbao SUVs and Jetour Traveller pushing similar design boundaries.
