Mercedes-AMG One Smashes Nürburgring Record with Sub-6:30 Lap Time
The Mercedes-AMG One, a Formula 1-powered hypercar, has once again pushed the limits of speed, becoming the first production vehicle to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Driven by GT3 ace Maro Engel, the AMG One clocked an astonishing 6:29.090 lap time, breaking its own record set in 2022.
The Evolution of a Record
In 2022, Engel took the AMG One around the 20.832km Nürburgring circuit, setting a production car lap record of 6:35.183. However, damp patches on the track prevented the car from reaching its full potential. This year, with clear weather conditions in September, Engel returned to the track and shaved over six seconds off his previous record.
Onboard footage from the lap showcases the hypercar’s blistering speed and Engel’s precise control as he navigated the Nordschleife’s infamous twists and turns. The AMG One’s latest lap is now a remarkable 14 seconds ahead of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Racing, the second-fastest production car on the Nürburgring lap leaderboard.
Formula 1 Power on the Track
At the heart of the Mercedes-AMG One is a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 engine, borrowed directly from Mercedes-AMG’s Formula One cars. The car also boasts four electric motors, combining to deliver an impressive 782kW of power and a top speed of 352km/h.
Despite its incredible speed, Engel wasn’t able to fully unleash the car’s power throughout the lap. At times, he had to ease off the throttle to regenerate energy for the battery pack, which provides up to 450kW of power.
A Hypercar for the Ages
While the AMG One is a track-focused monster, only a lucky few will get to experience it up close. One example of the circa-$3.8 million hypercar is currently on display in Australia, thanks to trucking magnate Lindsay Fox. Fans can catch a glimpse of the record-setting machine at the Fox Classic Car Museum in Docklands, Melbourne.
As the only production vehicle to break the 6:30 barrier at the Nürburgring, the Mercedes-AMG One has solidified its place as a legend in the world of hypercars, merging F1 engineering with road-legal performance like never before.
