Mahindra, a global name in the automotive industry, is shifting gears with its new "Electric Origin" sub-brand, marking its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market with two new electric SUVs. The Mahindra BE 6e and Mahindra XEV 9e were unveiled at the Unlimit India event in Chennai, India, offering impressive specifications and features that hint at an exciting future for electric vehicles. Both SUVs are part of Mahindra's ambitious plans to launch five new electric SUVs using the company’s new INGLO electric architecture.

Although these models are set to hit the Indian market in early 2025, the specific timeline for their Australian arrival is still to be confirmed. However, with strong market demand and Mahindra's commitment to the local market, Australian drivers can expect these models to reach showrooms in the near future.

The Electric Origins: What to Expect from Mahindra’s New SUV Lineup

The Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e are the first two models under the Electric Origin sub-brand, which will eventually expand to five vehicles. Both SUVs feature innovative electric designs and are built on Mahindra’s INGLO electric platform. The platform benefits from a collaboration with Volkswagen, a partnership that promises cutting-edge technology and performance.

Both models are expected to be a significant part of Mahindra’s global plans, which include a target for electric vehicles to comprise 20-30% of their global SUV sales by 2027. While these two SUVs will initially launch in India, Mahindra has confirmed that Australia will receive at least some of these upcoming electric vehicles.

Mahindra BE 6e: Compact Yet Powerful

The BE 6e is a five-door, five-seat SUV with a coupe-style design that blends a compact footprint with substantial interior space. At 4371mm long, it sits between a Mazda CX-3 and a Toyota RAV4 in terms of size, but its 2770mm wheelbase ensures a roomy cabin. It’s built on the INGLO platform, which includes features like a flat floor, a 455-litre boot, and a 45-litre front trunk (frunk).

This vehicle boasts a 59kWh battery with a 172kW powertrain that delivers an impressive 513km WLTP driving range. There’s also an upgraded version of the BE 6e with a 79kWh battery and a more powerful 210kW/380Nm motor, achieving a 533km WLTP range. Thanks to 175kW fast charging, it can recharge from 20-80% in under 20 minutes, making it perfect for those on the go.

Mahindra XEV 9e: A Larger, More Powerful Option

The XEV 9e is a larger, five-door SUV with a coupe-style swooping roofline, offering a premium experience with a 550km WLTP range thanks to its larger 79kWh battery and 210kW powertrain. This model is aimed at buyers who need more space, as it’s similar in size to the 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Prado, measuring 4990mm in length.

Inside, the XEV 9e offers a more luxurious feel, with three screens up front for a massive 110cm-wide display and an Infinity glass roof that is also shared with the BE 6e. The vehicle’s cargo capacity is 633 litres with a 150-litre frunk, offering plenty of room for family trips or groceries. Like the BE 6e, the XEV 9e comes with seven airbags and is expected to receive a five-star safety rating.

Technology and Features: The Future of Driving

Both the BE 6e and XEV 9e come equipped with Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture (MAIA), a state-of-the-art system that integrates Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processors for the fastest automotive-grade chipsets. This allows compatibility with more than 60 apps, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, and an enhanced driving experience.

Additionally, the vehicles are equipped with ADAS Level 2+ (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), which includes safety features such as auto-reverse parking, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras.

Australian Arrival: Timing Still to Be Confirmed

Mahindra has confirmed that Australia will be one of the markets receiving these innovative electric SUVs, though the exact timing remains unannounced. With right-hand drive (RHD) versions of both models in development, it’s highly likely that both the BE 6e and XEV 9e will make their way to Australia once they are ready for the global rollout.

As Mahindra continues to shift focus from its commercial and agricultural roots toward becoming a mainstream car brand, electric vehicles like the BE 6e and XEV 9e will be at the forefront of its growth strategy. Whether Mahindra will bring all five of the planned electric SUVs to Australia is still to be seen, but these two models are a promising start.

Looking Ahead: A New Era for Mahindra in Australia

With the Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e, the company is poised to make a significant impact in the Australian EV market. These new electric SUVs offer cutting-edge technology, impressive range, and a design that blends style and practicality. As Mahindra continues to expand its electric lineup, Australians can look forward to more eco-friendly driving options in the near future.
