Kia Tasman Ute: Why Some Variants Have a Front Lip – And How to Get One Without It

Kia’s highly anticipated Tasman ute is almost here, and as it gears up to arrive at Tynan Kia Sutherland this winter, there’s one feature that has caught the eye of ute lovers and off-road enthusiasts alike – a plastic lip on the bottom of the front bumper. But what’s it for, and why is it only on some variants?

    What’s the Front Lip For?

Unlike similar features on American pick-ups that improve fuel economy, the Kia Tasman’s plastic bumper extension serves a very different purpose in Australia – pedestrian protection. Kia Australia has confirmed that most Tasman ute variants will include the bumper extension to help secure a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

“It is an ANCAP thing. It’s for pedestrian safety,” explained Roland Rivero, head of product at Kia Australia. “If you don’t score highly on the pedestrian protection side of things, it’s going to be difficult to get to five stars.”

Which Kia Tasman Models Will Have It?

While most of the Kia utes arriving at Tynan Kia Sutherland will include the front lip to meet stringent Australian safety standards, there are a couple of key exceptions. The X-Line and X-Pro, which are the range-topping variants of the Kia Tasman, are built with off-road capability in mind. These models skip the bumper extension entirely to maintain a better approach angle for navigating steep terrain – but as a result, they will not be rated by ANCAP.

“The plan with X-Line and X-Pro, the two top trims, is they’re very much an off-road-focused and lifestyle-focused product. And they will be unrated,” Rivero added.

    Can You Remove the Lip?

For buyers who choose a Kia Tasman with the bumper extension, it’s still unclear whether the component can be removed after purchase or if it’s moulded into the bumper. What’s certain is that Kia genuine accessories, including a factory bullbar, will be available – and may even include a hoopless option to suit different buyer preferences.

These accessories can provide the rugged look and added protection desired by off-road enthusiasts while still offering peace of mind for those seeking top-tier safety ratings.

When Is the Kia Tasman Coming to Tynan Kia Sutherland?

The Kia Tasman will roll into Tynan Kia Sutherland showrooms from July 2025, starting with dual-cab pick-up variants. The dual-cab chassis will follow in August, with single-cab chassis variants landing between October and December. Customers can expect a choice of five equipment grades, including the much-anticipated Tasman X-Line and X-Pro.
