Kia Tasman Spotted in Local Testing

CarExpert reader Rick recently captured the Kia Tasman undergoing testing at Mount Ainslie in Canberra. The Tasman was spotted towing a trailer loaded with a Kia Cerato, benchmarking its performance against one of its biggest rivals—the Ford Ranger.

The Tasman’s 3500kg braked towing capacity matches the Ford Ranger and other top-selling dual-cab utes in Australia. The test setup—comprising a Cerato and a trailer weighing under 2500kg combined—was well within the Tasman’s capability.

Power, Performance & Payload

Under the hood, the Tasman packs a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 154kW and 441Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While it slightly trails the Ranger's 500Nm bi-turbo diesel, it’s on par with Toyota HiLux variants, offering: ✅ More power than most HiLux 2.8L variants (+4kW) ✅ Competitive payload capacity (1017kg–1195kg)

With a strong towing capacity, decent payload, and proven Kia reliability, the Tasman is shaping up to be a serious contender in the dual-cab ute market.
