Kia EV4 Hatchback: A New Electric Rival on the Horizon
Kia is gearing up to enter the competitive compact electric car market with the upcoming EV4 hatchback, a sleek, all-electric counterpart to the combustion-powered Kia K4. Recently spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring in Germany, the Kia EV4 hatchback is poised to take on rivals such as the MG 4, Cupra Born, and Volkswagen ID.3 when it arrives.
Under the Hood: Built for Efficiency
The Kia EV4 will ride on the brand’s dedicated E-GMP platform, shared with other popular models like the EV6 and EV9. While it will feature 400-volt charging, which helps keep costs down, the EV4 promises strong performance and the versatility electric vehicle buyers expect.
A high-performance GT version is in the works, likely featuring boosted power and handling capabilities. The EV4 will also adopt Kia’s latest design language, complete with distinctive ‘star map signature’ daytime running lights. Inside, a minimalist layout is expected, along with a large panoramic display combining the instrument cluster and infotainment screen for a tech-forward driving experience.
Production and Market Plans
Production of the EV4 hatchback is expected to take place at Kia’s plant in Slovakia, while the sedan version is set to start rolling off the production lines in South Korea by March 2025, according to The Korea Times. An Australian release for the EV4 has not yet been confirmed, and it remains to be seen whether both the hatchback and sedan will be offered locally.
The EV4 will follow the debut of the Kia EV3 small SUV, which is slated for an Australian launch in early 2025. The EV3 was previewed in concept form in October 2023, and production will begin in May 2024. The EV4’s arrival will be another key step in Kia’s ambitious plan to expand its electric vehicle lineup.
Aiming for the Future
Kia has big goals for its electric vehicle range, planning to introduce 15 EV models by 2026, with a target of 1.6 million annual electric vehicle sales by 2030. The EV4 will play a critical role in this expansion, offering a more affordable entry point into Kia’s electric range while still delivering modern design and advanced features.
As Kia continues to develop and fine-tune the EV4, the compact electric hatchback looks to be a strong contender in the growing EV market, bringing a mix of performance, design, and efficiency. Whether it arrives in Australia or not, the EV4 is set to make a splash on the global stage.
