Kia EV3 Lands in Australia with Advanced Safety Tech — Now Available at Tynan Kia Sutherland
Kia Australia has introduced its most affordable electric vehicle yet — the all-new Kia EV3 — and while the compact BEV (battery electric vehicle) is packed with impressive safety tech, some features may feel a little overzealous for everyday drivers.
Now available at Tynan Kia Sutherland, the EV3 is a welcome addition to Kia’s growing electric lineup, offering a budget-friendly entry point for eco-conscious Australians looking to make the switch to electric. But beyond its modern styling and EV credentials, what really sets this model apart is its extensive suite of safety technologies.
Safety Comes First – Whether You Like It or Not
As with most modern Kia models, the EV3 comes equipped with high-end driver assistance features, many of which are designed to meet the latest safety standards enforced across Europe and Australia. These include:
- Driver monitoring camera system with two-stage fatigue and distraction alerts
- Speed sign recognition and warning system that notifies drivers of perceived changes in speed zones
- Ongoing speed limit reminders, even when drivers are only slightly over the posted limit
While these features are aimed at improving road safety, real-world testing during the Australian EV3 launch revealed that the speed sign recognition system can sometimes misinterpret speed zones, particularly in car parks or areas with unclear signage — occasionally defaulting to unrealistically low limits.
Thankfully, Kia offers drivers the option to manually disable these alerts at the start of each trip. However, due to European regulations and ANCAP protocols, the systems must automatically turn on by default.
Why So Many Alerts?
At the EV3 launch event, Kia Australia Product Planning Manager Roland Rivero explained that this level of safety tech is essential for the EV3 to qualify for a five-star ANCAP safety rating — a crucial factor for many private buyers and fleet customers alike.
“If it wouldn’t default ‘on’, it would be a breach of the policy for ANCAP, and therefore wouldn’t be a five-star car under 2023 and beyond protocols,” Rivero noted.
Despite mixed reactions from drivers, Rivero added that safety ratings remain a top priority for many customers, especially those purchasing vehicles for business or fleet use.
