Kia’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup is rapidly expanding, and its latest addition, the Kia EV2, has just been spotted in Europe. However, it comes with a catch: it’s unlikely to make it to Australian showrooms. Set to debut in 2026, the EV2 is an electric SUV comparable in size to the Kia Stonic and will compete with models like the Ford Puma Gen-E and Mini Aceman in the European market.

The Key Barrier for Australian Release

The EV2 will be manufactured at Kia’s plant in Slovakia, exclusively for the European market. Kia Australia’s product boss Roland Rivero highlighted the challenges of bringing the EV2 to Australia, citing high logistics costs and a five percent import tariff due to the lack of a free trade agreement with Slovakia. “We would like [the EV2], but sourcing out of the Slovakian factory is pretty tough,” Rivero explained, recalling previous struggles with importing models like the Kia ProCeed and Sportage from Slovakia.

EV2 Features: Battery Options and Range

Under the hood, the Kia EV2 will reportedly offer two battery sizes. Entry-level models will come with a 42kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, while flagship models will be equipped with a 62kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) unit. This provides an estimated driving range between 300 and 440 kilometers, depending on the model. All EV2 models are expected to be front-wheel drive with a single-motor setup, making them efficient options for urban and suburban driving.

Size and Comparison with Hyundai Inster

The EV2 measures approximately 4000mm in length with a 2555mm wheelbase, making it slightly larger than the Hyundai Inster electric hatch. Unlike the EV2, however, the Inster is confirmed for Australia and will compete with other budget-friendly electric vehicles, such as the MG 4, BYD Dolphin, and GWM Ora.

Other Kia Electric Models on the Horizon

Kia is not slowing down in the EV space. The brand recently launched the EV5 medium SUV and will soon introduce the EV3 small SUV, which will be Kia’s most affordable electric car in Australia. Additionally, the EV4 hatch and sedan are slated for a 2025 debut to challenge the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal.

In the North American market, Kia is also working on an electric pick-up aimed at rivals like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck. However, this model will not be offered in Australia.

Looking Ahead: Potential Future Options for Australia

While the EV2 may not arrive in Australia due to logistical and cost constraints, Kia is exploring other options for Australian buyers. A smaller electric model, potentially called the EV1, could fill the gap in the local market by providing an affordable, compact EV solution. For now, the EV3 small SUV will serve as Kia’s entry-level electric option, marking the brand’s ongoing commitment to expanding its electric offerings for various global markets.

As Kia continues to develop its EV range, the Australian market remains a consideration, with hopes of more accessible, budget-friendly models in the near future.
