Kia EV2 Concept Unveiled – But It’s ‘Highly Unlikely’ for Australia
Kia has taken the wraps off the Concept EV2, a compact electric city SUV set to join the brand’s growing EV line-up. However, despite its cutting-edge design and urban-friendly size, the EV2 is "highly unlikely" to make its way to Australian showrooms.
What is the Kia EV2?
Unveiled at Kia’s 2025 EV Day in Spain, the EV2 concept previews a new entry-level electric SUV that will sit below the EV3 small SUV and EV4 electric sedan. It’s intended as a battery-powered alternative to the petrol-powered Kia Stonic, combining compact proportions with modern EV technology.
Europe-Focused Production
The primary reason Australia is set to miss out on the EV2 is its European manufacturing location. The production EV2 will be built in Slovakia, which not only exposes the model to higher logistics costs but also incurs a 5% import tariff due to the lack of a free trade agreement between Australia and Slovakia.
Kia Australia’s Product Planning boss Roland Rivero has expressed interest in the EV2 but acknowledged that Slovakian sourcing creates hurdles. "We would like to offer EV2," Kia Australia said in a statement, "but production out of Slovakia does present some hurdles when it comes to logistics and cost, so it is highly unlikely."
The EV2 isn’t alone — the Europe-only Kia EV4 hatchback, which debuted alongside the EV2, also faces similar barriers for the Australian market. Instead, Australia will only receive the Korean-built EV4 sedan.
Compact EV with Big Design
The EV2 concept embraces Kia’s evolving 'Opposites United' design language, which has influenced recent models like the EV5, EV9, and updated Seltos. While the concept version shows off bold styling and futuristic features, the final production model is expected to be toned down slightly.
Key concept design highlights include:
- Rear-hinged rear doors with no central B-pillar (unlikely to reach production)
- Exposed front headlights without covers
- Flush door panels with no visible handles
- Split LED daytime running lights, which may influence future Kia models like the next-generation Seltos
Innovative Interior Features
Inside, the EV2 concept blends modern technology with creative functionality, offering features aimed at maximising space in a compact footprint.
Interior highlights include:
- Dual widescreen displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system
- Cloth dashboard with blue upholstery and orange accents
- A white LED light strip running across the front and rear doors
- Fold-up rear seats, similar to Honda’s Magic Seats, allowing flexible cargo and passenger configurations
- Front seats that slide fully back when parked, enabling occupants to relax or even sit on the flat floor for meals or leisure activities
Concept-Only Innovations
Some of the more futuristic touches in the concept are unlikely to reach the final model, including:
- Pop-up sliding luggage dividers and straps
- Message lighting system that displays text through the front windows to communicate with pedestrians
- Removable triangular speakers
Practical Technology & Features
Kia has confirmed that the production EV2 will include vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to power external devices like laptops, small appliances, or even another EV.
The EV2 will be built on Kia’s lower-cost front-wheel-drive version of the E-GMP platform, which also underpins the EV3, EV4, and EV5. This platform supports 400-volt charging, providing faster charging times compared to traditional 400-volt systems found in earlier electric vehicles.
The Verdict for Australia
Despite its innovation and clever packaging, the Kia EV2 will likely remain out of reach for Australian buyers. While Kia Australia is keen to bring as many electric vehicles as possible to local showrooms, the cost and logistical hurdles tied to Slovakian production appear too steep.
What’s Next?
The Kia EV2 production version is set to launch in Europe and select other markets in 2026. Meanwhile, Australian buyers can look forward to the Kia EV3 small SUV and EV4 sedan, both of which are confirmed for local showrooms.
As Kia continues to expand its electric vehicle portfolio, there’s always hope that future cost-effective production solutions could reopen the door for the EV2 Down Under.
