Jeep Teases the Next-Gen Compass: What We Know So Far
The Jeep Compass might not be the first model that springs to mind when you think of Jeep, but it's a crucial part of the brand’s lineup. Now, Jeep has teased a new, third-generation Compass, set to debut in Europe in 2025.
The teaser sketch reveals a bolder, more modern look with chunky fenders, squared-off wheel arches, slim headlights, and a sleek ‘floating’ roof. Production will kick off in Melfi, Italy, continuing Jeep’s “Freedom of Choice” strategy with various multi-energy propulsion systems. North American and global production will follow in 2026.
One of the most significant changes is the platform. The new Compass will be the first Jeep built on the STLA Medium platform, shared with the Peugeot 3008. This platform can accommodate petrol, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, hinting at the possibility of an all-electric Compass.
The STLA Medium platform offers impressive capabilities, including support for vehicles between 4.3 and 4.9 metres long, with a ground clearance exceeding 220mm. Electric models are expected to deliver up to 700km of range with a Performance battery pack, and around 500km with the Standard pack. The architecture will support both single- and dual-motor powertrains with power outputs ranging from 160kW to 285kW.
The current Compass, which debuted in 2016, has been produced in several countries, including Brazil, China, India, Italy, and Mexico. It received a significant update in 2021, but Jeep Australia recently made a shift, sourcing the Compass from Italy instead of India. This switch saw the removal of petrol and diesel engines, making way for mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
In Australia, the Compass has to pull double duty as both a small SUV and a mid-size SUV alternative, especially after the Cherokee’s discontinuation. While it's the third best-selling Jeep in the country, its sales are modest compared to the competition. In 2022, Jeep sold 1862 units of the Compass, with a slight drop to 1455 in 2023.
The new-generation Compass could be a game-changer, especially with its electric potential and fresh design. Keep an eye out for its European debut in 2025!
