Hyundai is pushing the boundaries of high-performance electric vehicles with its latest concept, the RN24—a prototype that hints at a more affordable, compact N car, potentially paving the way for electric city performance in a smaller package. This isn’t your typical city car, though. Hyundai has packed the 478kW electric drivetrain from the Ioniq 5 N into this aggressive concept, showcasing a vision of compact power that’s still affordable and thrilling.

Meet the RN24: A Compact Powerhouse

The RN24 is part of Hyundai N’s ‘Rolling Labs’ series—experimental concepts designed to test and showcase new technology for future performance cars. With a design inspired by the Inster city car (though the two models are unrelated), the RN24’s smaller dimensions provide an ideal platform to trial a high-performance electric package on a smaller scale. The RN24 is fitted with the dual-motor system from the Ioniq 5 N, capable of producing a blistering 478kW for acceleration from 0-100km/h in under 3.4 seconds.

To achieve this performance, Hyundai has cleverly adapted the Ioniq 5 N’s powertrain to fit within a more compact, lightweight frame. While still weighing in at 1880kg, the RN24 is about 350kg lighter than the Ioniq 5 N, thanks to its minimal bodywork, exposed roll cage, and strategic weight reductions.

Rally-Inspired Performance and Customizability

Equipped with the same 84kWh battery pack as the Ioniq 5 N—reworked to fit its smaller chassis—the RN24 adds World Rally Championship (WRC)-inspired Powertrain Drive Control Logic, allowing drivers to fine-tune various aspects of performance. From adjusting power output and accelerator sensitivity to selecting regenerative braking modes, the RN24 can be tailored to provide the ultimate driving experience for each user.

For added flair, Hyundai fitted the RN24 with its synthetic sound generator, allowing drivers to switch between three different sound profiles, including one that mimics a turbo-petrol engine. The RN24 goes a step further with its Rally Mode, designed to distribute torque to all four wheels and create an e-Handbrake feature—perfect for drifting, much like a traditional rally handbrake.

Cutting-Edge Design and Racing-Inspired Details

The RN24 isn’t shy about showing off its performance-focused design. The concept’s open-body style exposes the roll cage, while the rear features a prominent TCR-inspired spoiler made from 3D-printed components. Forged 19-inch wheels from Hyundai’s i30 Sedan N catalogue and a quick steering setup further enhance agility and responsiveness.

With elements inspired by rallying, such as the cooling systems for the battery and motors, and the sound-enhancing rear wheel arches, the RN24 takes cues from Hyundai’s WRC program. The vehicle’s lightweight materials and racing-style open structure not only improve performance but also set the tone for future design directions in Hyundai’s electric performance lineup.

What Lies Ahead for Hyundai’s Electric N Lineup?

While the RN24 won’t go into production, Hyundai’s commitment to bringing high-performance EVs to the masses is clear. A smaller, more affordable N model than the Ioniq 5 N is expected to hit showrooms by the end of the decade, with the RN24 showcasing many of the features and technologies that may shape future production cars. For fans of Hyundai’s N performance brand, the RN24 is an exciting preview of what’s to come in the world of compact, high-performance electric vehicles.
