Hyundai's Next Frontier: Exploring Hybrid N Models
In a groundbreaking revelation, Albert Biermann, the executive technical advisor of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), hinted at the possibility of a hybridized N range during a discussion with Australian journalists at the launch of the Ioniq 5 N. Addressing the media via video link, Biermann shared insights into HMC's plans to integrate hybrid powertrains into the N lineup, opening up a new chapter in Hyundai's performance legacy.
Biermann emphasized the technical feasibility of hybridizing the N range, noting that more powerful hybrid engines are already in development. HMC is reportedly working on a hybrid driveline featuring a version of the Sonata N-Line's robust 2.5-liter turbo-petrol engine, capable of delivering 213kW and 422Nm of torque in its standard configuration.
"We will develop more powerful hybrid powertrains for other vehicles in the Hyundai Motor Group, and I see an opportunity to introduce an N car as a hybrid," Biermann explained. He hinted at the possibility of a hybrid variant for the i30 N sedan, although he stopped short of confirming its production. "Whether it will happen or not, I cannot tell you at this point. But from a technical standpoint, it is possible."
As Hyundai commits to offering smaller and more affordable N models in the electric age, Biermann disclosed plans to explore hybrid concepts to replace the i20 N and i30 N, both facing uncertain futures in the European market. "I am pushing for another project for a small car with a hybrid concept," he revealed. "But it's too early to say if there's any chance to bring it to our customers."
While acknowledging the complexities of transitioning to electric mobility, Biermann stressed the importance of offering hybrid solutions for smaller N car segments to facilitate a smoother transition. "We have to accept that there is a transition phase, and the timing of this phase is different for different regions," he remarked. "As a global player, I can tell you this transition will take quite some time in some regions."
