How the Kia EV3 is Paving the Way for the Tasman Ute’s Future banner

The 2025 Kia EV3 isn’t just another compact electric SUV—it’s a critical piece of Kia Australia’s long-term strategy, especially when it comes to the highly anticipated Tasman ute. With tighter CO2 regulations under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), the success of Kia’s smallest and most affordable EV could determine how the diesel-powered Tasman survives in the Australian market.

Why the EV3 is Crucial for Kia’s CO2 Targets

Kia Australia has big expectations for the EV3 and EV5, forecasting 4000-5000 EV3 sales per year and 5000-6000 EV5 sales annually. These two models are the “tag team” carrying the brand’s electric push, ensuring Kia meets NVES requirements while balancing its lineup with internal combustion engine (ICE) models like the Tasman.

Kia Australia’s Product Planning General Manager, Roland Rivero, explained the challenge:

“The credits are substantial for every EV product… Tasman’s alright in the interim phase, but as the years progress and the targets get harder and harder, we’re going to need a little bit more effort from our EVs and maybe look at other powertrain options and adjustments on the Tasman.”

Currently, diesel models like the Tasman are somewhat protected under NVES’s weight-based emissions calculations, which are more lenient for light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and ladder-frame SUVs. However, future tightening of the rules means Kia must boost EV sales to offset higher-emission models and avoid hefty fines.

Could the EV3’s Success (or Failure) Impact the Tasman?

With NVES potentially being restructured to base CO2 penalties on actual vehicle sales, Kia must ensure strong EV3 and EV5 demand to maintain a balanced emissions profile. If the EV3 underperforms in Australia or Kia loses supply to higher-priority markets like Korea and Europe, the company could struggle to offset emissions from the Tasman—potentially leading to:

🚨 Higher prices for the Tasman to compensate for CO2 penalties. 🚨 Lower supply or delays for the diesel-powered ute. 🚨 Exploration of hybrid or electric Tasman variants sooner than expected.

“EV3’s very important for us and we need to sell a nice number,” Rivero emphasized, highlighting its role in Kia’s broader strategy.

The Road Ahead for Kia’s EV and Ute Lineup

While Kia has no immediate plans to introduce an electric Tasman, it acknowledges that the future of utes is evolving. The EV3 and EV5’s performance in the market will determine how long Kia can sustain diesel models before transitioning to alternative powertrains.

At Tynan Kia, we’re watching these developments closely, ensuring our customers stay ahead of the curve. Whether you’re interested in the EV3, EV5, or the upcoming Tasman ute, our team is ready to help you navigate Kia’s future lineup.
