Headlights, High Beams and DRLs: What You Need to Know – Tynan Motors Explains banner

We all know headlights are essential at night—but did you know that there are specific laws and lesser-known rules around how and when to use them? Whether you're driving in darkness, fog, or rain, proper use of your vehicle’s lighting can help prevent accidents and save lives.

At Tynan Motors, we care about more than just getting you into the right car—we’re here to make sure you drive it safely and confidently too. Here’s a practical guide to headlight regulations and smart lighting habits for NSW drivers and beyond.

When Should You Use Your Headlights?

According to the NSW Government, your headlights must be on:

    • Between sunset and sunrise
    • At any other time when there isn't enough daylight to see a person in dark clothing 100 metres away

This means even during overcast or stormy weather, if visibility is poor, it's not just smart—it’s the law to turn your headlights on.

At Tynan Motors, many of our newer models include automatic headlight sensors, which turn your lights on when needed. However, it’s still important to stay aware and override them manually if necessary.

High Beam: When It's OK—and When It Isn't

High beams are useful for improving your forward visibility on dim or unlit roads, but they come with strict etiquette:

✅ You can use high beams on any road—even those with street lights—if no one is in close proximity. ❌ You must dip to low beam:

    • When an oncoming vehicle is within 200 metres
    • When you're driving 200 metres or less behind another vehicle
    • After briefly flashing high beam before overtaking

Many modern cars—like those available at Tynan Motors—now come with adaptive or smart high beam technology, which automatically dims when it senses traffic. This ensures you stay compliant and considerate on the road.

What to Do If You’re Dazzled by Headlights

Being temporarily blinded by another vehicle’s headlights is not only uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. If you’re dazzled:

    • Avoid staring at the light source
    • Look to the left edge of your lane or road line
    • Slow down or pull over safely until your vision clears

Also, be mindful of your own lights. Never use any fitted light in a way that could dazzle another road user.

Fog Lights: Use Only When Necessary

Fog lights—both front and rear—are designed for adverse conditions like fog, smoke, dust, or heavy rain. They must not be used in normal visibility, and legally must be turned off once conditions improve.

If your car doesn’t have fog lights, turn on your regular low-beam headlights during the day in poor weather.

Not sure how or when to use your fog lights? The service team at Tynan Motors is happy to demonstrate their correct use during your next vehicle check-up.

What Are Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)?

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) are static lights that turn on automatically when the vehicle is in motion. They enhance visibility, particularly:

    • Early in the morning
    • Late in the afternoon
    • During overcast, rainy or smoky conditions

Back in 2009, the NRMA proposed mandatory DRLs across all new vehicles, estimating they could reduce fatal and non-fatal collisions by up to 12%. Despite this, DRLs remain non-mandatory under Australian Design Rules.

Fortunately, many of the latest models at Tynan Motors now feature DRLs as standard—one more way we help drivers stay safe on the road.
