Double Demerits in Force for the Christmas period: What You Need to Know banner

As the festive season in fast approaching, double demerits will once again be implemented across the state for the Christmas and New Year period.

What Are Double Demerits?

Double demerits are an enforcement measure where traffic violations attract double the usual penalty points. For example if you commit a traffic violation like speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, or running a red light during the designated double demerit period, you will receive double demerit points.

The stricter enforcement if designed to deter dangerous driving and reduce road accidents, which tend to rise during peak holiday periods when traffic volumes increase and people may be in a hurry, distracted or fatigued.

When Do Double Demerits Apply?

In 2024, the double demerit period in NSW will run from Friday December 20th, 2024, to Sunday January 5th, 2025. This two week period encompasses the busiest time of year on the road, including Christmas and New Year holidays, when people travel to visit family and friends, go on holidays and attend social gatherings.

Why Is This Important

NSW police report that the Christmas period sees an increase in road accidents, some of which can be fatal. There are several factors contributing to this, including increased traffic volumes, driver fatigue, and a rise in risky behaviour such as speeding or driving under the influence. The double demerit points system is designed to encourage safer driving by making people think twice before committing dangerous driving habits.

By introducing double demerits during the Christmas period, the government hopes to create a strong deterrent effect. This measure is particularly important as people travel longer distances to visit family and friends, often in unfamiliar areas or in poor weather conditions. It is also a time when celebrations, alcohol and fatigue can impair judgement on the road.

Tips for Staying Safe and Avoiding Double Demerits

1. Plan Ahead - Avoid rushing. Plan your journey in advance, allowing extra time for rest stops, breaks and unexpected delays. This will help you avoid the temptation to speed or drive while tired.

2. Avoid Distractions - Keep your phone out of reach, stay focused, and ensure all passengers are wearing seatbelts. If you need to use your phone pull over safely first.

3. Take Breaks - If you're feeling tired, pull over at a rest stop and take a break. Fatigue can significantly impair your reaction time and decision-making ability.

4. Drink Responsibly - If you're heading to a celebration, plan your transport ahead of time. Utilise public transport, a ride share app such as Uber or organise a designated driver to avoid the temptation of drinking and driving.

5. Be Aware of the Weather - Summer in NSW can bring very sudden weather changes. Be prepared for wet or hot conditions and adjust your driving accordingly.

6. Know the Road Rules - Familiarise yourself with speed limits and traffic rules, especially in rural areas or places you may not be familiar with. Understanding the local road rules can help you avoid fines and demerit points.

Stay Safe

The holiday season is meant to be a time of celebration and relaxation, it is also time to be extra careful on the roads. By adhering to the road rules and being extra cautious behind the wheel, you can help ensure that the festive season remains safe for everyone.

Remember, double demerits are designed to keep roads safer and to deter reckless driving. Whether you're commuting, visiting family or going on a holiday, make sure you follow the road rules, stay alert, and take care of yourself and others on the road.

Stay safe, drive responsibly, and have a happy holiday season! 😄🎄
