Chery Unveils Plans for First In-House 4WD Ute, Set to Rival Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux
Chery has revealed a surprise concept for its first in-house four-wheel-drive dual-cab ute, known as the KP11, with a focus on petrol and hybrid powertrains – steering clear of diesel. This move positions Chery to compete with market leaders like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, with a production version expected as early as 2025.
The KP11 concept hints at a production-ready design, with styling cues reminiscent of GWM and Mitsubishi models. Although its windows are blacked out and specific technical details remain scarce, the ute promises to make a splash in the competitive off-road segment.
Petrol and Hybrid Power: No Diesel in Sight
Chery’s KP11 will reportedly offer three propulsion options, none of which involve diesel. According to AutoIndustriya, the ute will feature a new 2.4-litre turbo-petrol engine, a petrol plug-in hybrid capable of electric-only driving (similar to the BYD Shark 6), and a petrol range-extender variant, where the petrol engine focuses on charging the battery rather than driving the wheels.
Though detailed specifications on engine performance, battery capacity, and driving range are yet to be disclosed, the concept’s lineup signifies a departure from the diesel-dominated market, particularly in the ute segment. This could appeal to drivers seeking greener alternatives.
Off-Road-Ready with Modern Features
The KP11 concept showcases two versions: an Off-Road variant and an Urban grade. The Off-Road model, highlighted in the reveal, is equipped with rugged features such as BFGoodrich all-terrain tyres, dual-tier LED headlights, a roof-top tent, and side steps. Its rear bumper, fitted with access steps similar to the Ford Ranger, enhances utility for adventurers. The bold "CHERY" script across the grille further solidifies its aggressive design language.
While the Off-Road version focuses on outdoor capabilities, the Urban grade may cater to city dwellers seeking a versatile, stylish utility vehicle.
Chery’s Ute Expansion Plans for Australia
Though Chery Australia has yet to confirm its plans for the KP11, the company has been eyeing the ute market for some time. A Chery ute for Australia has been on the wish list for more than two years, with rumblings dating back to 2022. Executives at Chery International, including vice president Zhang Guibing, have acknowledged Australia as a strategic market, making the potential for a local launch a real possibility.
Chery’s experience with utes stems from its Karry brand, which produced smaller, van-derived dual-cabs. However, the KP11 marks Chery’s first foray into a true off-road-capable, body-on-frame dual-cab ute, signaling a significant evolution in its product lineup.
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
The KP11 is set to enter production in 2025, although it is unclear whether this date applies to China, the Philippines, or other markets. Chery Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, Lucas Harris, has acknowledged the progress being made but emphasized the need for a successful performance from the brand’s current offerings before the ute can be introduced locally.
As Australia remains a key market for Chery, the KP11 could arrive sooner than anticipated, especially if Chery’s momentum continues to grow. With a combination of hybrid and petrol powertrains, cutting-edge design, and off-road capabilities, Chery’s first in-house dual-cab ute could become a strong contender against established rivals in the Australian market.
Stay tuned for more updates as Chery prepares to launch its innovative KP11 ute, with the potential to shake up the market with its unique blend of power and technology.
