Australians have a deep love for the open road, with coastal adventures remaining a top choice for road trips. A recent survey conducted by eBay Australia has highlighted the country's favorite road trip routes, and while some choices were expected, there were a few surprises along the way.

Iconic Road Trips Still Popular Despite Rising Costs

Despite the current cost of living pressures, the survey found that three-quarters of Australians plan to embark on an iconic road trip in the next 12 months. Millennials, in particular, are most likely to hit the road for an adventure. The survey also showed that the average Aussie takes about four road trips per year, with many choosing to explore lesser-known parts of the country.

Top Road Trip Routes

Unsurprisingly, Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, stretching from Torquay to Allansford, was crowned the most popular road trip destination, chosen by 27% of respondents. However, a close second was the Pacific Coast Touring Route, which runs from Sydney to Brisbane, favored by 26% of road trippers. Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef Drive rounded out the top three, with 23% of respondents choosing the picturesque route from Cairns to Cape Tribulation.

Caravans: The Preferred Road Trip Ride

When it comes to the mode of transport, Aussies prefer to hit the road in style, with 29% choosing a caravan for their travels. Campervans and motorhomes were also popular, with 18% and 11% of respondents respectively choosing these options for their road trips.

Top Vehicles for Aussie Road Trips

According to eBay Australia’s My Garage tool, the Toyota LandCruiser, Toyota HiLux, and Ford Ranger were the most saved vehicles. These preferences closely mirror monthly vehicle sales trends, showing Aussies love a durable and reliable ride when heading out on the road.

Road Trip Preparation is Key

While most Australians (90%) take safety precautions before setting off on a trip, the survey found some concerning gaps. Only 68% checked their tyre pressures, and just over half ensured their vehicle's lights were functioning. Worryingly, only 54% of respondents knew how to change a tyre.

Paul Maric, founder of CarExpert, advises that proper preparation is key to enjoying a road trip:“Aussies love a good road trip, whether it’s a weekend getaway or an iconic trip around Australia. But, to keep your adventure from turning sour, make sure you check your tyres, your vehicle’s weight limits, and that your car has had a recent service before you leave.”

Maric also recommends stocking up on essential supplies like jumper cables, fuel containers, and tyre repair kits, all of which can be easily found on eBay.
