2026 MG 4: What’s Next for MG’s Popular Electric Hatch?

The MG 4 has been a standout in Australia’s electric vehicle market, ranking as the third-most-popular EV in 2024. However, big changes are on the horizon for MG’s electric hatchback, with a new model recently revealed overseas—but it won’t directly replace the current MG 4 in Australia.

What’s Happening with the MG 4 in Australia?

While China will phase out the existing MG 4 in favor of an all-new electric hatch, MG Motor Australia has confirmed that the current model will remain available locally and in other export markets like the United Kingdom. Instead of a direct replacement, MG Australia is considering bringing the new model under a different name, possibly MG 3 EV or MG E5.

An MG Motor Australia spokesperson stated:

"MG Motor Australia is reviewing this new model and considering it for the Australian market. It is important to note this model is not built on the same platform as the existing MG 4 and will not replace the current model."

2026 MG 4: Expected Updates

Rather than an all-new version, the MG 4 for Australia is likely to receive a mid-life update by the end of 2025. Some of the anticipated changes—derived from the related MG S5 electric SUV—could include:

The new-generation MG 4 hatch recently revealed in China is approximately 10 cm longer and features a slightly larger wheelbase. However, it differs significantly from the current model as it’s not built on the same rear-wheel-drive platform.
