Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of alternative fuel technology with the unveiling of the 2026 Hyundai Nexo, a next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle set to arrive in Australia next year. While fully electric vehicles (EVs) have dominated recent headlines, Hyundai remains committed to hydrogen-powered mobility, offering a compelling alternative for long-range, zero-emission driving.

    Over 700km of Driving Range

One of the standout features of the new Nexo is its extended driving range, now claimed to exceed 700km per fill-up. This marks a significant improvement over the current model’s 609km range, giving drivers more confidence for long-distance travel. With three- to five-minute refueling times, the Nexo delivers a refueling experience much closer to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles than battery-electric alternatives.

    More Power, Faster Performance

Hyundai has refined the fuel-cell system in the 2026 Nexo, delivering a power boost from 135kW to 190kW. The electric motor, which drives the wheels, now produces 150kW and 350Nm, significantly improving acceleration. The new Nexo can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.8 seconds, down from 9.2 seconds in the previous model, and reach a top speed of 179km/h.

    A Bold New Look

The 2026 Nexo showcases a boxier, more rugged design, taking inspiration from Hyundai’s Initium concept. This modern styling falls under Hyundai’s new ‘Art of Steel’ design language, featuring:

✔ HTwo LED headlights for a distinctive night-time look ✔ Larger dimensions for a more spacious interior (80mm longer, 5mm wider) ✔ New aerodynamic enhancements to improve efficiency and reduce road noise ✔ A choice of six premium colors, including Goyo Copper Pearl, inspired by Korea’s natural landscapes

    Tech-Packed Interior

Step inside the new Nexo, and you’ll find a high-tech, driver-focused cabin with top-tier technology and comfort:

🚗 Dual 12.3-inch displays with Hyundai’s latest infotainment software 📱 Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto 🛜 Over-the-air (OTA) software updates 🔑 Digital Key 2 and fingerprint start system 🔊 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system 🔋 Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to power external devices 🛞 Reclining and ventilated rear seats for enhanced comfort

    Advanced Safety and Convenience

The new Nexo is packed with cutting-edge safety and driver assistance features, ensuring peace of mind on the road:

✅ Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) ✅ Adaptive Cruise Control & Lane Centering Assist ✅ Highway Driving Assist for semi-autonomous driving ✅ 360-degree camera & blind-spot monitoring ✅ Remote Smart Parking Assist – allowing you to park the car using the key fob

Up to nine airbags ensure maximum protection in the event of a collision, and Hyundai promises “top-grade crash safety” for its hydrogen flagship.

Will the 2026 Nexo Be Available to the Public?

While Hyundai has confirmed that the new Nexo will arrive in Australia in the first half of 2026, it remains to be seen whether it will be available for general sale or offered exclusively via lease programs for businesses and government fleets, as with the current model.

For reference, the total lease cost of the current Nexo in Australia is nearly $100,000, and only 35 units exist nationwide, serving customers such as the ACT and Queensland governments, as well as corporate fleets.

    Hydrogen Infrastructure in Australia

Hydrogen refueling remains a key challenge, but Hyundai is actively investing in Australia’s hydrogen ecosystem. Currently, there are nine hydrogen refueling stations, with eight more planned. Hyundai’s Sydney HQ station has also undergone a $2 million upgrade, now producing up to 20kg of green hydrogen daily via solar panels.
