2025 MG ES5: A New Chapter in MG’s Electric Revolution
The highly anticipated 2025 MG ES5 has officially debuted, stepping into the shoes of the popular MG ZS EV as a more sophisticated and capable electric small SUV. Positioned as a high-riding sibling to the MG 4 hatchback, this new model promises to shake up the competition in the growing electric SUV market, rivaling the likes of the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV3, and Chery Omoda E5.
Built on Innovation
The MG ES5 is based on the advanced Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) for electric vehicles, which is shared with the MG 4. This rear-wheel-drive platform is designed to optimize performance, efficiency, and comfort. The entry-level model is equipped with a 125kW/250Nm electric motor, but MG enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting confirmation on whether higher-spec variants will match the MG 4's more powerful 150kW/250Nm and 180kW/350Nm motors, which are supported by larger battery packs.
Impressive Performance and Range
According to Car News China, the MG ES5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.0 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. The ES5 offers two battery options: a 49.1kWh or a 62.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, both developed in collaboration between MG’s parent company SAIC and renowned battery manufacturer CATL. This partnership has resulted in some of the thinnest EV batteries in the world, measuring just 110mm. The ES5’s range, depending on the battery size, is reported to be between 425km and 525km based on China’s CLTC testing, though Australian buyers should expect slightly different figures under the stricter WLTP standards.
Advanced Design and Features
The MG ES5 boasts a sleek, modern design that echoes the aesthetics of its MG 4 sibling. Standout exterior features include a split headlight design, a bold lower air intake, silver roof rails, and Y-shaped tail-lights. Buyers can also choose between 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels. The vehicle’s dimensions are slightly larger than its predecessor, measuring 4476mm long, 1849mm wide, and 1621mm tall, offering more space and a more commanding road presence.
Inside, the ES5 features a tech-forward cabin with a large touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Additional interior highlights include a wireless phone charger, a panoramic sunroof, and a column-mounted gear selector.
Enhanced Safety and Comfort
While official safety features have yet to be confirmed, MG has set its sights on earning a five-star safety rating in Europe, indicating that the ES5 will likely come equipped with cutting-edge driver assistance and safety technologies. In terms of comfort, the ES5 introduces a multi-link independent rear suspension, replacing the torsion beam suspension found in the ZS EV, delivering a smoother and more refined driving experience.
Arrival and Expectations
Set to arrive in local showrooms sometime in 2025, the MG ES5 is poised to be a strong contender in Australia’s electric vehicle market. VFACTS data reveals that the MG ZS EV remains a popular choice, with over 1000 units sold in Australia between January and September 2024. However, with fierce competition from models like the BYD Atto 3, MG will need the ES5 to deliver on its promises of improved range, performance, and technology to maintain its foothold in the market.
The stage is set for the 2025 MG ES5 to redefine what a small electric SUV can offer, and it will be exciting to see how it stacks up against its competition when it lands next year.
