Retaining Diesel Power – A Rare Offering
Kia has confirmed that the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine (137kW/416Nm) will remain, making the Sportage one of the last affordable diesel mid-size SUVs in Australia. While many competitors, including the related Hyundai Tucson, have shifted to petrol and hybrid options, the diesel Sportage will continue to be available across all four grades – S, SX, SX+, and GT-Line – paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
More Hybrid Options for Australian Buyers
Currently, only the SX and GT-Line variants offer hybrid technology, but the 2025 Sportage facelift is expected to introduce hybrid powertrains across more trims. The 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid gets a boost in power to 172kW and will now offer all-wheel drive (AWD), a feature that has been available overseas but is new to Australia.
Kia is expanding its hybrid lineup to comply with Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), as only the hybrid Sportage falls under the CO2 emissions limit of 141g/km.
Petrol Engine & Transmission Updates
The 2.0-litre petrol engine (115kW/192Nm) will remain, but the manual transmission is being discontinued, meaning the six-speed automatic will now be the base model transmission. This is expected to increase the starting price of the Sportage, given the current $2000 gap between manual and automatic versions.
Meanwhile, the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine (132kW/265Nm) will now be paired with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic instead of the current seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This change could improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
