2025 Kia EV3: A New Era for Small Electric SUVs in Australia
Kia is set to shake up the Australian EV market with its most compact electric SUV yet—the 2025 Kia EV3. Positioned below the larger EV5, the EV3 is expected to be a game-changer, offering a competitive price point that could start with a four, making it one of the most affordable electric SUVs in Kia’s lineup.
Kia EV3: Affordable and Advanced
With order books opening soon, the Kia EV3 is set to compete against popular small electric SUVs like the BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and Hyundai Kona Electric. According to Kia Australia’s general manager of product planning, Roland Rivero, the EV3 will be priced significantly lower than the EV5, which starts from $56,770 before on-road costs.
Industry experts predict the EV3 could be priced under $50,000, making it an attractive choice for Sydney drivers looking for an affordable yet high-quality electric SUV. While it may cost more than some Chinese competitors, such as the BYD Atto 3 Premium ($44,990), it is expected to be more budget-friendly than the Hyundai Kona Electric ($54,000).
Battery and Performance
Unlike the Kona Electric, which shares its platform with petrol and hybrid variants, the EV3 is built on Kia’s dedicated E-GMP electric-vehicle platform. To optimize affordability, Kia has switched it to front-wheel drive and a 400V battery system instead of the premium 800V setup seen in larger EVs.
Australian government documents indicate the EV3 will be available in three trim levels:
- Air Standard Range
- Earth Long Range
- GT-Line Long Range
Each variant is expected to feature a 150kW electric motor, delivering a balance of efficiency and power. In Europe, the EV3's 58.3kWh battery is rated for a driving range between 414km and 436km (WLTP), while the 81.4kWh battery in the Long Range models offers up to 605km per charge.
